Son of Mary Santos and Philip Mickelson, a Navy fighter pilot who later worked for commercial airlines. He with Portuguese, Swedish and Sicilian ancestry. His maternal grandfather, Alfred Santos, was a caddy at Pebble Beach Golf Links, where he took Phil golfing as a child. He grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He began playing golf under the instruction of his father before he started school, who took him out two or three times a week.
He graduated from the University of San Diego High School in 1988 and studied psychology at Arizona State University in Tempe on a golf scholarship.
