Cage is the son of August Coppola, who was a professor of literature, and Joy Vogelsang, who was a dancer and choreographer. Nicholas grew up in a Catholic family.

In an interview , Aronofsky said of Cage’s decision to leave the film that “Nic was a complete gentleman, and he understood that my heart was with Mickey and stepped aside.
