Daughter of Zelma Currie and Floyd Richard Bullock. She had an older sister, Ruby Aillene, whom she was separated from when her parents moved to Knoxville. She went to live with her paternal grandparents, strict religious deacons of the Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church, located on Woodlawn Road.

After World War II, she was reunited with her parents and they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. Two years later, the family moved back to Nutbush, where she attended Flagg Grove Elementary School from first through eighth grade.

She sang in the choir at Nutbush Spring Hill Baptist Church. When she was eleven, her mother left Floyd Bullock, and at thirteen, her father remarried and moved to Detroit. She and her sister lived with her grandmother Georgeanna in Brownsville.

She was a maid for the Henderson family and when she was sixteen, her grandmother died suddenly. 

After the funeral she went to live with her mother in St. Louis, Missouri, where she was reunited with her sister. She there she graduated from Sumner High School in 1958. She then worked as a nursing assistant at Barnes-Jewish Hospital hoping to become a nurse.

Together with his sister they began to frequent nightclubs in St. Louis, and at the Manhattan Club, they saw Ike Turner and his band, Kings of Rhythm, perform for the first time. 

One night, when she was eighteen, Kings of Rhythm drummer Gene Washington gave her a microphone during a break and after hearing her sing, Ike allowed her to perform, becoming a guest vocalist ever since.

It was at the end of the 50s when she began her singing career as a member of the group directed by Ike Turner, with whom she married.

Tina Turner Withdrawal

In 2000 she announced on his last tour that he was retiring to pursue her private life, but in the meantime she is re-releasing a new greatest hits album, All The Best! , which includes three previously unreleased tracks, and the film The Goddess , directed by Ismail Merchant and James Ivory .

In 2008 she came out of retirement to go on her international tour Tina!: 50th Anniversary which lasted until 2009 and was one of the most profitable in show history.

Mother of two sons named Michael and Craig, the fruits of her marriage to Ike Turner, she is going through a rough patch and makes a living performing in cabarets and nightclubs. Tina dumped Ike after a fight on the way to the Dallas Statler Hilton on July 1, 1976.

She ran off with only 36 cents and a Mobil credit card in her pocket. On July 27, Tina filed for divorce over irreconcilable differences requesting $4,000 a month in alimony, $1,000 a month in child support for her, as well as custody of her. 

The divorce was formalized on March 29, 1978. She married at the age of seventy-three in a civil ceremony with the Swiss record producer Erwin Bach after twenty-seven years of relationship and a few days later, on July 21, 2013, they celebrate a Buddhist ceremony in her mansion on the shores of Kusnacht lake in Zurich (Switzerland).

Turner revealed in her 2018 memoir My Love Story that she had suffered from life-threatening illnesses.  In 2013, three weeks after her wedding to Erwin Bach, she suffered a stroke and had to learn to walk again. 

In 2016, she was diagnosed with bowel cancer. She turned to homeopathic remedies to treat her high blood pressure which resulted in damage to her kidneys and eventual kidney failure. Her chances of receiving a kidney were low and she was urged to start dialysis. 

She considered assisted suicide and signed up to be a member of Exit, but Bach offered to donate a kidney for her transplant. She underwent kidney transplant surgery on April 7, 2017
