He didn’t start on his school’s varsity team until his junior year, and did not receive his first college recruiting letter until the summer before his senior year. He was greowing to his adult height of 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) that same summer. 
During his senior year, h was averaging 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and 2.3 assists and helped lead them to a 25-4 record. That same season, he was recording 14 double-doubles, scored 30 or more points on eight separate occasions, and recorded a career-high 51 points at Carson on January 6, 2006.
He didn’t attract much attention from top baseball programs college basketball until Coach Ben Howland offered him a scholarship to play for the UCLA Bruins after Jordan Farmar declared for the NBA draft.
He was wearing number 0 throughout his career at UCLA. As a freshman in 2006-07, he was playing backup to Darren Collison and was used primarily as a defender and power player off the bench. He was averaging 3.4 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.7 assists on the year.
