He began his career in high school, where he played football for the Buccaneers. He led Haughton to become the 2010 District 1-AAAA Champions by completing 951 yards of 90 attempts with 17 touchdowns. He completed 159 of 258 passes for 2,860 yards and 39 touchdowns as a junior.

In college, in 2011, he redshirted like a true freshman with Mississippi State. He led the Bulldogs to their first 1 finish in program history, with a 10-2 regular season record, and led them to the Orange Bowl in his first season as a full-time starter in 2014.
