Shiv Nadar Biography

Nadar was born in 1945 in Moolaipozhi Village , about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from Tiruchendur in the district of Thoothukudi , Tamil Nadu , India.  His parents are Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi. 

His mother, Vamasundari Devi, is the sister of SP Adithanar , the founder of the newspaper Dina Thanthi .

He was studying at Town Higher Secondary School, in Kumbakonam.  He was also studying at Elango Corporation Senior High School, in Madurai .

He was admitted to the first form (Sixth Standard) in June 1955 and he was continuing his education at Town High School until June 1957. Later, he was joining St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School, Trichy , and he was completing secondary education here. 

He was receiving an undergraduate degree from American College, Madurai  and a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from PSG College of Technology ,Coimbatore.

He was starting his career at Walchand Group College of Engineering , Pune (COEP) in 1967. He soon was leaving to start his own company, in partnership with a number of friends and colleagues. These partners were Ajai Chowdhry (former Chairman of HCL), Arjun Malhotra (CEO and Chairman of Headstrong), Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S. Raman, Mahendra Pratap and DS Puri. 

The initial company that him and his partners started was Microcomp, a company that focused on the sale of teledigital calculators in the Indian market. 

HCL was founded in 1976, with an investment of RS. 187,000. 

In 1980, HCL was enterng the international market by opening Far East Computers in Singapore to sell IT hardware. The company was reporting revenue of Rs 1 crore in the first year and continued to target Singapore operations.  He was remaining the largest shareholder without retaining any management control.

In 1996, he was founding SSN College of Engineering in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on behalf of his father, Sivasubramaniya Nadar. He was taking an active role in the activities of the university, including the gift of RS. 1 million in HCL shares for the university. 

In 2006, he was announcing that the faculty will promote research as well as ensure that students benefit from links between foreign universities. He was joining the executive board of the Indian School of Business in 2005.

In March 2008, Nadar’s SSN Trust announced the creation of two Vidyagyan schools in UP for rural students, where free scholarships will be provided for 200 students from 50 districts in Uttar Pradesh. 

He visited Town Higher Secondary School in February 2011 and donated computers and other equipment worth RS. 80 lakhs. He was serving as chairman of the board of governors of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT-KGP), a technical institute until 2014.

In 2008, the government of India awarded Nadar a Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his contribution to the information technology industry. 

In 2007, the University of Madras awarded him an honorary doctorate.  Nadar was also recognized as E&Y’s 2007 Entrepreneur of the Year (Services). 

In 1995 he became the Dataquest IT Man of the Year.

In 1994, Shiv Nadar decided to focus more on his philanthropic interests and founded the Shiv Nadar Foundation. The purpose of the foundation was to work for the benefit of future generations by providing them with access to education and a good quality of life. 

Following his passion for philanthropy, Shiv Nadar founded the Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in 1996. The college was named after his father and, over the years, opened several other branches of education within from campus; thus changing it to Institution SSN. 

Following this, he was giving away HCL university shares worth RS. 1 million for his funds. In 2006, he was announcing that the University will focus on helping students by improving and promoting research, and offering other benefits to students with their links with foreign universities.
