She was born on March 22, 1976, at Southern Baptist Hospital , in New Orleans , Louisiana, while her father, John Draper Witherspoon, was a student at Tulane University medical school. Her father was born in Georgia and served as a lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves.
She was in private practice as an otolaryngologist until 2012. His mother, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Witherspoon (born Reese), is from Harriman, Tennessee. Betty Witherspoon earned three degrees in all, including a doctorate in pediatric nursing.
She became a professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University. Ella Witherspoon has claimed descent from Scottish-born John Witherspoon, who signed the United States Declaration of Independence; however, this claim has not been verified by genealogists from the Society for Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Her parents are still legally married, although they separated in 1996.
Witherspoon was raised Episcopalian and has said she is proud of the “ultimate Southern education” she received.
She said that she gave him “a sense of family and tradition” and taught him to “be aware of people’s feelings, be courteous, be responsible and never take what you have in your life for granted.”

In 1998, she had major roles in three films: Overnight Delivery , Pleasantville , and Twilight . In Pleasantville , she starred opposite Tobey Maguire in a tale about teenage brothers from the 1990s who are magically transported onto the set of a 1950s television series.
She played Jennifer, the sister of the character from Maguire who is primarily concerned with appearances, relationships, and popularity. Her performance earned her praise and earned her the Young Hollywood Award for Best Female Breakthrough Performance.
