She was born in Salinas, California , and she was raised on the West Coast , from Oregon to Southern California . Her mother, Gina (born Guangco), held various white-collar positions, and her father, Gregory Hudgens, was a firefighter . 

She has a younger sister, Stella, who is also an actress.  She was raised Catholic . All of his grandparents were musicians.

She was raised Catholic, but has since turned away from that branch of Christianity, now identifying as a nondenominational Christian. She attends the Los Angeles affiliate of Hillsong Church. 

In May 2016, she paid $1,000 in property damage restitution to the US Forest Service by carving initials inside a heart into a rock in the Coconino National Forest and displaying them on his personal Instagram account.

In March 2020, she made a video in which he said that it is “inevitable” that people die from the COVID-19 pandemic.  The video caused controversy because it seemed to be downplaying the impact of the disease and the need for preventive measures. He subsequently apologized for his “insensitive” comments.

Beginning in 1998, she performed in musical theater as a singer and appeared in local productions of Carousel , The Wizard of Oz , The King and I , The Music Man , and Cinderella , among others. 

Two years into her career in plays and musicals, she start auditioning for commercials and television shows, and her family was moving to Los Angeles after she won a role in a television commercial. 

Her acting career began at the age of 15, and she briefly attended Orange County High School for the Arts, followed by homeschooling with tutors. 

She had her first acting role in an episode of the sitcom Still Standing , in which she played Tiffany. Following her appearance on the series, she guest-starred in an episode of the series Robbery Homicide Division , which aired on CBS in 2002.

She made her theatrical debut in the 2003 drama film Thirteen , in the role Claus secondary. 

The film, which revolved around teenager Tracy trying to fit in and getting caught up in the wrong crowd, was a commercial success, grossing $10 million worldwide. Despite its minor commercial success, the film received positive reviews.  USA Today called Thirteen the most “powerful of all recent sagas of young rebels”. 

She subsequently landed a role in the 2004 sci-fi adventure film Thunderbirds , based on the 1960s television series. She played the character of Tin-tin. The film was a commercial failure and was heavily criticized for “abandoning the original concepts”.

In January 2006, she played Gabriella Montez, one of the lead roles in the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical . The film saw Hudgens playing the new girl in high school who falls for the captain of the basketball team. 

The two later reveal a passion for singing and audition together for the school play. Hudgens acted alongside Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale,  the former of whom she teamed up with during the audition process due to her “chemistry of hers”. 

It was the most watched Disney Channel movie that year with 7.7 million viewers in its premiere broadcast in the United States, until the August premiere of The Cheetah Girls 2 ., which achieved 8.1 million viewers.

The Disney Channel aired a weekly show called Road to High School Musical 2 , beginning June 8, 2007, leading up to the premiere of High School Musical 2 in August. The show offered viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the film. 

USA Today ‘s Robert Bianco awarded the film three stars out of four, saying that High School Musical 2 was “sweet, smart, full of talent and energy, and awash with innocence”. 

While critics enjoyed the film, they was noting that the timing of its release seemed odd, opening just as school was about to start again, while the plot involved the gang going on summer vacation.

She was number 62 on the 2008 FHM 100 Sexiest Women and number 42 on the 2009 list.  She also appears on the Maxim lists . She was included in People ‘s annual lists of the “100 Most Beautiful People” for 2008 and 2009.
