Christopher Maurice Brown was born on May 5, 1989,  in the small town of Tappahannock, Virginia,  to Joyce Hawkins, a former daycare director, and Clinton Brown, a corrections officer at a local prison. 

He has an older sister, Lytrell Bundy,  who works in a bank.  Music was always present in Brown’s life from his childhood. He would listen to soul albums that his parents owned,  and eventually began to show an interest in the hip-hop scene. 

Brown learned to sing and dance at a young age and often cites Michael Jackson as his inspiration.  He began performing in his church choir and in various local talent shows. 

When he imitated an Usher rendition of “My Way“, his mother recognized her vocal talents and they began looking at a record deal opportunity. 

At the same time, Brown was experiencing personal problems. His parents had divorced him and his mother’s boyfriend terrorized him by subjecting his to domestic violence.

At age 13, Brown has beendiscovered by Hitmission Records, a local production team that visited his father’s gas station looking for new talent.  Hitmission’s Lamont Fleming provided voice training for Brown, and the team helped put together a demo package and approached contacts in New York to pursue a record deal. 

Tina Davis, senior A&R executive at Def Jam Recordings, was impressed when Brown auditioned at her New York office, immediately leading him to meet former Island Def Jam Music Group president Antonio “L.A.” Reid. , who offered to sign him that day. “I knew Chris had real talent,” says Davis. “I just knew that he wanted to be a part of it.”

Negotiations with Def Jam continued for two months, with Davis later losing his job due to a corporate merger. He was asking her to manage her, and once Davis agreed, she promoted the singer to labels including Jive Records, J-Records, and Warner Bros. Records. 

He ultimately chose Jive due to his successful work with young acts like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake

He stated, “I chose Jive because they have the most success with the younger artists in the pop market,  I knew it was going to capture my African-American audience, but Jive had a lot of strength in the pop area as well. like longevity in racing.” 

He was attending Essex High School in Virginia until early 2005, when she moved to New York to pursue her music career.

After signing with Jive Records in 2004, he start  recording her self-titled debut studio album in February 2005. By May, there had already been 50 songs recorded, 14 of which were selected for the final track listing. 

The singer worked with various producers and songwriters—Scott Storch, Cool & Dre, and Jazze Pha among them—commenting that they “really believed in him”.  Brown co-wrote most of the tracks. 

“I write about the things 16-year-olds go through every day,” says Brown. “Like you got in trouble for sneaking your girl into the house, or you couldn’t drive so you stole a car or something.” The entire album took less than eight weeks to produce. 

Released on November 29, 2005, Chris Brown ‘s self-titled album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 154,000 copies. 

Chris Brown was a relative commercial success for the time; selling over two million copies in the United States, where it was certified twice platinum by the RIAA, and three million copies worldwide. 

The album’s lead single, “Run It!”, made Brown the first male act (since Montell Jordan in 1995) to have their debut single reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100; later four more remain weeks.

Three of the other singles, “Yo (Excuse Me, Miss)”, “Gimme That”, and “Say Goodbye”, appeared in the top twenty on the same chart. 

On June 13, 2006, he was releasing a DVD titled Chris Brown’s Journey , showing footage of him traveling through England and Japan, preparing for his first visit to the Grammy Awards, behind the scenes of his music videos and mistakes. 

On August 17, 2006, to further promote the album, he start his co-headlining headlining tour, The Up Close and Personal Tour . Due to the tour, the production of his next album was delayed for two months. 

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital received $10,000 in ticket revenue from Brown’s 2006 “Up Close & Personal” tour. He has made appearances on UPN’s One on One and The N’s Brandon T. Jackson Show in its pilot episode.

In January 2007, he was landing a small role as a fan of the band in the fourth season of the American television series The OC .  He then made his film debut in Stomp the Yard , opposite Ne-Yo, Meagan Good, and Columbus Short on January 12, 2007. 

In April 2007, he was the opening act for Beyoncé, in the Australian leg of her The Beyoncé Experience tour. 

On July 9, 2007, he was appearing on an episode of MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 for the event, it was retitled: Chris Brown: My Super 18  celebrating his eighteenth birthday in New York City.
