Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg was born on June 5, 1971, in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston , Massachusetts . He is the youngest of nine siblings,  including actor Robert and singer-actor Donnie. 

His mother, Alma Elaine (born Donnelly; 1942-2021), was a bank clerk and nursing assistant, and his father, Donald Edmond Wahlberg Sr. (1930-2008  ), was a delivery driver and a veteran of the US Army in the Korean War. His parents was divorcing in 1982; afterwards, he divided his time between them. 

He is of Swedish descent, but also has more distant Irish and French-Canadian ancestry. 

On his mother’s side of the family, he was distantly related to author Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was raised Catholic,  and he was attending Copley Square High School on Newbury Street in Boston. By age 13, he had developed an addiction to cocaine and other substances.

He didn’t received his high school diploma until June 2013, at the age of 42.

In 1993, he was making his acting debut in the television movie The Substitute . After this appearance, he was dropping the name “Marky Mark“.

He was able to hit a 1,100-yard target on his second day, a feat that usually takes weeks to accomplish.  He was saying in several interviews that he would retire at the age of 40 to concentrate on fatherhood  and professional golf.
