Her mother was considering abortion, as she was conceived when she was 17 years old. Alfonso,her father, left the family when Nicole was two years old.
Rosemary later married German-American Gary Scherzinger, whowas adopting Nicole, and whose last name she eventually took. She has a younger sister, Keala. At age six, they was moving to Louisville, Kentucky, where her mother was a clerk and his stepfather was a welder.
Scherzinger describes her upbringing as difficult, as she was growing up “without much money” and she was supporting her parents by waitressing, taking local modeling jobs, and being part of a local amusement park entertainment company, Kentucky Kingdom.
With her grandfather a priest, she was raising Roman Catholic and she was considering herself conservative with “very strong religious beliefs” and she was going to church twice a week to make her mother proud.
At the age of 14, she was enrolling at the Actors Theater in Louisville, where she was cast in her first professional play, La Bête.
She was graduating in 1996 from the School of Junior Performing Arts (YPAS) at duPont Manual High School, where she was appearing in many plays, including Alice in Wonderland, in which she played Alice.
She was surprised that she got the part from her because she was “against a girl with blue eyes and blonde hair.” In 2007, she was inducted into the DuPont Manual Alumni Hall of Fame as one of the youngest.
Since 2013, she has awarded YPAS an annual $2,000 namesake scholarship. After earning a scholarship, she was attending Wright State University majoring in theater arts with a minor in dance.
During this period, she was landing the lead roles in regional productions of the musicals Chicago , Guys and Dolls , and Show Boat .
In her senior year of college, Scherzinger was hired by new bandleader Travis Meeks Days to contribute vocals on her self-titled second studio album. Meeks searched for a singer who could “offer some more worldly/operatic textures and sounds”.
Touring in support of the album followed, leading Scherzinger to drop out of college.Towards the conclusion of the tour, Meeks was stating that the two parted ways creatively, claiming that she “didn’t seem to understand music very well”, but noted that she is an “incredible artist”.
