Robert Douglas Thomas Pattinson  was born on May 13, 1986 in London,  the youngest of three children of Clare (Charlton), a booker at a modeling agency, and Richard Pattinson, a vintage car distributor.

He was growing up in a small house in Barnes with two older sisters, Elizabeth (Lizzy) and Victoria. 

He start learning to play guitar and piano at the age of four. 

He was attending Tower House School, from which, at age 12, he has been expelled for stealing adult magazines from a post office store and later selling them to his male classmates. 

He was completing his studies at The Harrodian School. As a teenager he was working as a photo model for British fashion brands and magazines to improve his pocket money and developed a love of cinema where he counted Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando and Jean-Paul Belmondo among his idols performance. 

In his late teens and early twenties, he was perfoorming acoustic guitar concerts at open mic nights in London pubs, where he was singing his own written songs, either solo under the stage name Bobby Dupea or with his band Bad Girls . 

He was considered becoming a musician or going to college to study speechwriting, but never thought of pursuing an acting career; his teacher at school even advised him not to join the drama club because she thought he was unfit for creative arts. 

However, when he was 13, he was joining the local amateur theater club called the Barnes Theater Company after his father was convincing him to attend because he was quite shy.

At age 15 and after two years of working behind the scenes, he auditioned for the play Guys and Dolls and landed his first role as a Cuban dancer without lines. Landing the lead role of George Gibbs in the upcoming play Our Town ,  he was spotted by a talent agent sitting in the audience and began looking for professional roles. 

He also was appearing in the plays Macbeth , Anything Goes , and Tess of the d’Urbervilles . He had planned to go to college, but couldn’t because the filming of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire went over schedule. He used to share a flat in London’s Soho with fellow actor and good friend of his Tom Sturridge.

He had supporting roles in the German-made-for-TV movie Ring of the Nibelung in 2004, and in director Mira Nair’s period drama for Vanity Fair , although her scenes in the latter are deleted and only appear in the version in DVD. 

In May 2005, he was scheduled to appear in the UK premiere of The Woman Before at the Royal Court Theatre, but was sacked shortly before opening night and was replaced by Tom Riley.

He then appeared in Ciro Guerra’s Esperando a los Bárbaros, based on a 1980 novel by JM Coetzee, along with Mark Rylance and Johnny Depp. Boyd van Hoeij, writing for The Hollywood Reporter, called her character “a pretty flat supporting role”, while The Guardian described her performance as “stiff” and “too articulate”. 

He was playing the role of a spy handler in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet (2020), opposite John David Washington, and he was marking his return to big-budget films. He based his character’s mannerisms on those of author Christopher Hitchens. 

Jessica Kiang of The New York Timeshe called him “charming” and praised his chemistry with Washington.  Pattinson next appeared as part of an ensemble cast in The Devil All the Time , a psychological thriller based on the novel by Donald Ray Pollock.
