Gina Carano graduated from Trinity Christian High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also led the girls’ basketball team there. She also played volleyball and softball while attending the University of Nevada, Reno, for a year. She then went to the University of Nevada in Las Vegas for three years. She majored in psychology. Gina Joy Carano is the youngest daughter of former NFL Dallas Cowboys quarterback Glenn Carano. 

Glenn Carano was also a member of the Pittsburgh Maulers in the United States Football League. Gina’s father played football at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Gina’s father is currently the General Manager of the Eldorado Resorts properties of Circus Circus, Eldorado and Silver Legacy.

Gina Carano has therefore followed in the footsteps of her father ‘s sport if. They are, however, the only members of this family to have a foothold in sport. Gina Carano’s mother, Dana Joy, and sisters Kasey and Christi have no connection to professional sports outside of Gina’s fights which they have often attended.

Gina Carano began her sports career with muay thai. She was encouraged to do so by her then-boyfriend, kickboxer Kevin Ross. She quickly started training alongside Thohsaphol Sitiwatjana, a Thai martial artist and muay thai instructor better known as Master Toddy.

After having chained twelve victories, a defeat and a draw, Gina Carano was invited by the “World Extreme Fighting” to fight Leiticia Pestova in one of the very first female MMA fights. At the end of this fight in June 2006, Gina managed to win the hearts of WMMA fans. The title of the “female face of MMA” was then stuck on her. However, she refused to accept it. 

Gina Carano then joined forces with the organization Strikeforce which was then an American mixed martial arts and kickboxing organization based in San Jose. She fought there a fight from which she emerged victorious by unanimous decision against Elaina Maxwell in 2006.

In 2008, she was ranked fifth in Yahoo’s Top 10 Most Influential Women. In 2009, she held the third position in the international rankings in the Featherweight category according to the unified Women’s MMA Rankings. Her fight against Cris “Cyborg” Justino at Strikeforce was the first-ever women’s MMA championship fight in the organization.

On August 15, 2009, the two women faced off at the HP Pavilion in San Diego, California. Cris was then considered the most formidable fighter in the organization. The fight took place in front of almost 14,000 spectators and half a million viewers.

The very first women’s main event in history was also the last fight for Gina who took the blows of “Cyborg” until the TKO at the end of the first round. If Gino physically lost the fight, she however drew an inner satisfaction from it as she made it known after the fight. 

“I felt like I was high on a drug that I had never taken before… Maybe I could have enjoyed this feeling… If I hadn’t been in front of thousands of people. If I wasn’t about to fight. If Cyborg wasn’t staring at me from the other end of the cage.”

She made fun of wearing a mask in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
