Gina Carano began her sports career with muay thai. She was encouraged to do so by her then-boyfriend, kickboxer Kevin Ross. She quickly started training alongside Thohsaphol Sitiwatjana, a Thai martial artist and muay thai instructor better known as Master Toddy.
After having chained twelve victories, a defeat and a draw, Gina Carano was invited by the “World Extreme Fighting” to fight Leiticia Pestova in one of the very first female MMA fights. At the end of this fight in June 2006, Gina managed to win the hearts of WMMA fans. The title of the “female face of MMA” was then stuck on her. However, she refused to accept it.
Gina Carano then joined forces with the organization Strikeforce which was then an American mixed martial arts and kickboxing organization based in San Jose. She fought there a fight from which she emerged victorious by unanimous decision against Elaina Maxwell in 2006.
