In 1979 after committing several robberies and hold-ups, he was committed to a reformatory in upstate New York where he met Cus D’Amato , Cus D’Amato’s manager and boxing trainer. 
In 1980 he was released into the custody of D’Amato who became his legal guardian in 1985.
